Liner Notes:
"I first heard Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the summer of 1999. I went to
visit the great rockabilly guitarist Sleepy LaBeef at his home in
Fayetteville Arkansas so we could sign a recording contract. For years I
had heard other people record her songs like Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley
and Sleepy LaBeef but never Sister herself. So there we were sipping
coffee in Sleepy's living room when he put on a record of Sister Rosetta
Tharpe saying, 'Everything I learned on the guitar was from Sister
Rosetta.' Powerful words from a great guitar player. It would be a few
months after that event that a friend of mine gave me a cassette tape of
Sister Rosetta. When I put it on I was completely moved. The singing, the
playing, the spirituality, it was a revelation. Surely others must know
about her and someone must have put together a tribute to her. The answer
was no. So I started asking around to see if other musicians knew about
her. When speaking to one I would casually say, 'I've been listening to a
lot of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, what do you think of her?' Most of the
responses were 'Wow you know Sister, she's awesome!' Eventually my
question reached the ears of Maria Muldaur. Coincidentally she sang on the
Sleepy LaBeef record I produced. Maria loved Sister and actually saw her
perform. I asked about putting together a tribute and involving her in it.
She couldn't say yes fast enough. It's been about two years, hundreds of
phone calls, and thousands of miles traveling, but finally the CD is
together. I want to thank Maria Muldaur for her tireless effort to get
many of these artists together for this project. To Sleepy LaBeef for
introducing me to perhaps the most underrated American musician of the
20th century. To all the artists who unselfishly created and shared their
great music. Finally an extra special thanks to the late Sister Rosetta
Tharpe, who has provided joy and inspiration in my life and now hopefully
yours.
