Additional Liner Notes:
"What is the blues? It's easier to feel than to talk about. There's
something infectious and appealing about this bittersweet music whose
roots lie in a peoples attempt to express incredible sadness and loss. And
maybe within the expression lies some magic that can ease the pain. Being
a kid isn't always that easy. So much to learn, so far to grow. And each
day brings brand new experiences, some boundless and joyful, some limiting
and painful. Scuffed knees, bruised feelings, and a challenging world 'out
there' make the ability to express how you feel a necessity. Listen to
these songs with your kids. Sing along, clap along and maybe even write
some new blues songs of your own.
It is my hope that this collection brings with it some smiles and laughter
and inspiration that will make the adventure of growing up a little more
rich and a little less painful.
-- Leib"

Additional Liner Notes:
"The Mushroom Music Writers' Workshop has been an annual event for the last
three years. It came about after the owner Michael Gudinski and Managing
Director, Ian James reinterated the fact that Mushroom Music wanted to set
the pace and offer more than any publishing company in Australia by being
able to provide the writers with the chance to become a part of a very
special concept. From there a group of writers are invited up to Mount
Macedon with the sole purpose of writing songs. Some people are there all
week, especially our overseas visitors, and some are there for a day. The
Writers have just the one day to come up with a song and more often than
not that is with a writer they have only just met. This year we had the
potential for 29 songs if every pair wrote one song in their allocated day
together. We ended up with 30 demoed - only one without words.
Each year Roland has supplied a demo studio and Andrew Scott has worked
some incredibly long hours recording the songs written, on the day they
were written. Some of the songs you are hearing could probably benefit
from a bit more time spent on them - but the point here isn't to impress
you with finished recordings, but to give you a snapshot of some of the
songs written over the three years and for you to enjoy some of the writer
combinations. Some brilliant moments have been captured and besides, a
demo's a demo!
72 songs have been written at these workshops and it was hard to choose
which ones to put on this disc. From the first year we had six songs
commercially released, last year we had two songs recorded, one about to
be recorded and one is on hold. Some on this CD will appear recorded soon
and sounding much more than a demo. The rest are up for grabs and very
coverable (remember to ask first though).
The Workshop has come about thanks to the involvement and input of a lot
of people ands this is a good chance to thank them. Michael and Sue
Gudinski first and foremost for opening up their house at Mount Macedon.
The writers for taking the risk - songwriting is so personal and opening
up in a communal environment is not always easy. Roland for suppling the
latest and best of equipment so all the songs can be documented and Andrew
Scott's adept mastering of the equipment and the songs. David Smith spends
hours ensuring every whim of every writer (and Mushroom folk!) is catered
for and Diane Gaborit keeps everything just perfect. Thank you.
Ian James, Jane Southwell, Sharon Portelli and everyone else at Mushroom
Music including myself love workshop week and look forward to it every
year.
Jacqui Dennis: Creative Manager, November 1996"
Note:
"I'll Be Alright" was released by My Friend The Chocolate Cake on their
"Lighthouse Keeper" single (see Collaborations section) but Michelle did
not perform on that version of the song.
